Visual Development
&
Concept Design

I enjoy concept design and visual development. By creating layouts and props, I love immersing people in another world, sparking their curiosity to explore the stories behind it.

Bad Dog” was my capstone animation project. Along with eight other team members, we dedicated a year of hard work to complete this short film. In the team, I was not only an animator but also contributed to the visual development during the pre-production stage.

The film is about from a dog fighter’s daughter to a put-upon waitress, BAD DOG follows Maggie through both the past and present as she learns to hold her own in a world rife with objectification and determined to defang her.

Here are two style frames I did for the scene Maggie hits the Zippoman with a beer bottle. The style frame gave us a clear direction, showing us what the final rendered animation should look like.

I drew the barn from two different angles and explored various color combinations. Since Maggie burns down the barn in the story as an act of revenge, I wanted to use bold colors to convey her emotions.

I did the line art for the layouts of two shots. The lines are simple, but I was very careful in studying the character placement and the background perspective based on the storyboard.

During the pre-production stage, I was responsible for designing props such as cigarettes, beer bottles, beer glasses, bathroom items, and a dog muzzle. Based on the style of the film, I kept these objects with simple lines.

Shapo was the second collaborative project I participated in. I was responsible for a small portion of the visual development, including the color design for one scene and the layout for one shot. Different color schemes brought entirely different atmospheres.

This is one of my projects, with the theme of a cemetery and crows.

In this project, I focused on the environment perspective. I added many interesting details in the illustration to enhance the atmosphere and allow the audience to imagine the story behind it.

This is a concept design of a forest with a spider monster. A brother and sister accidentally stumble upon the monster’s lair in the dimly lit forest, where the trees are covered in spider webs and its prey.
